Where Experience May Not count

By Billi Lim

Lately in our country, a hot issue has been brewing. 2 of our government linked organizations are now looking for a new CEO. The question was raised whether we should hire a Foreigner as a CEO or not. Some argued that it should be a citizen of our country whereas some felt that it should go to the best man regardless of their nationality.

Would a foreigner be better ? Some felt so especially in the Hotel Industries. It seems the local people would readily take orders from a foreigner. Some felt that it means our minds are still being colonized.

The question now is : Are there really no citizen qualified to take the job ? Interesting enough the Head Hunt is on, looking for the person who can meet the requirements. But what are the requirements ? Perhaps the old requirements do not fit into our present world anymore. Why do I say that ? Take one of the companies which is in the Automobile Industry - Proton. It was successfully run by a “Historian” before he stepped down recently.

The other one is in the Airline Industry – Malaysian Airlines. Interestingly we had a budget airline (Air Asia) which is run very successfully by a person whose experience was selling records and CDs. Now, what do all these say ? Experience may not be the most important criteria. Perhaps the people should not be from the industry at all. He / She should be a person with a totally new & open mindset.

In that case, I suggest that all of us without any experience in those industry should apply. It’s not a joke. All it takes is your COURAGE to apply and to LEARN FAST once you got the job. Come to think about it, if we have one year’s experience and from then on we stop learning, even if we work for 20 years , it’s actually only ONE year’s experience times 20 !

Many of you would have known about a famous Japanese Actor who acted in the movie “The Samurai”. His name is Toshiro Mifune. Interestingly he didn’t apply to be an actor in the first place. His application to be a Janitor landed wrongly in the actors’ tray. He was auditioned and the rest is history.

May the courage be with you.

Your fellow traveler in time.
